// editorial verdict

Twenty Twenty-Four is the WordPress 6.4 annual default theme, shipped late 2023. The first WordPress default designed around three explicit site profiles: Entrepreneur, Photographer, Writer. Each profile uses the same block theme architecture with different default patterns and color palettes. Still actively maintained by the WordPress core team alongside the newer Twenty Twenty-Five.

Pros

  • Maintained by WordPress core (no vendor risk)
  • Three coherent design profiles cover most small-site use cases out of the box
  • Among the fastest themes in any independent benchmark
  • Excellent reference for understanding FSE patterns

Cons

  • Twenty Twenty-Five (2026 default) supersedes it as the canonical recommendation for new sites
  • Limited Customizer-style options (intentional, but a learning curve)
When to pick Twenty Twenty-Four

Pick Twenty Twenty-Four when you want a polished default block theme with strong starter pattern coverage and you are not yet ready to migrate to the newer Twenty Twenty-Five.

When to avoid Twenty Twenty-Four

Avoid if you want the most current default theme (Twenty Twenty-Five) or if you need a complete out-of-the-box design system.

Frequently asked questions

Is Twenty Twenty-Four still maintained?
Yes. The WordPress core team continues to ship patches and compatibility updates. Twenty Twenty-Five (the 2026 default) supersedes it as the recommended choice for new sites, but Twenty Twenty-Four remains supported.
Should I pick Twenty Twenty-Four or Twenty Twenty-Five?
Twenty Twenty-Five for new builds. It's leaner, more pattern-rich, and reflects the current FSE state-of-art. Twenty Twenty-Four if you're already running it and don't want to migrate, or if you prefer its specific design profiles.
What are the three site profiles?
Entrepreneur, Photographer, Writer. Each profile uses the same block theme architecture but ships with different default patterns and color palettes. You pick one at activation; the others are accessible via the pattern library.
Is Twenty Twenty-Four a block theme?
Yes, fully. It uses the WordPress Site Editor (FSE) for all template editing. There is no Customizer-based configuration; everything happens through blocks and patterns.
